"I don't need a college degree/a piece of paper to tell me what I already know how to do." Well could be, but when you love someone and want to spend the rest of your life with them, you need a piece of paper to make it legally binding. Why not do the same with your education and career? If the person you love more than anything in this world unfortunately passes away and if the two of you aren't legally married, then all of the love, hard work, years, and investment you've put into that person is no longer valid and you won't be able to receive any of the person's benefits

because you didn't have "that piece of paper." Think of this same measure with your education and career. If you've worked long and hard at your career without "that piece of paper," and someone comes along not only with a degree, but with the same skills you have, if not better, you are up for a promotion and the person with the degree is coming in for the position you are wanting the promotion for, you're out of luck. Get that degree. Make it legally binding.
